5.0 out of 5 stars I am amazed

I bought this on sale at more than half off of the regular price on the HP website. I use it on Skype. It works so well that I purchased another and sent it to my friend in England as a Christmas present. I don't know why anyone would need to purchase a mic or headset with this. It does everything. The mic is so sensitive it picks up the tv in the other room and I have to cut it back. It is wonderful in low light adjustment, although you do have to work with it a bit. I've had years of experience working with a camera program because of eBaying though.

The only time I have had a problem is when I am running applications while on Facebook, like YoVille, Fishville or Treasure Madness at the same time we are on Skype. Sometimes it freezes up on the other end and as soon as I shut the application down, my friend tells me it resumes normal operation. I have a new HP Pavilion with Vista Premium, mega speed and memory, so I don't know what causes it. It doesn't happen any other time. Maybe my ISP Cox Communications is to blame. They are painfully slow at times.

I might mention here that I was really concerned over a review I read that someone said that it wasn't compatible with their vista. The one I received was completely compatible, up to date and and was instantly plug and play when I hooked it up. No problems whatsoever. I was so relieved. Maybe there were some older versions at one time?

I do mention that this is the first quality webcam for me. The other was a cheapie. I would buy these for gifts again for anyone else. The HP website had them on sale after I bought one here. I've really enjoyed Skype with this. It has opened a whole new world for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Webcam for a Fair Price

This is my first webcam for home use. I bought it for 2 reasons. One I have a HP computer, monitor and speakers--so it all matches and it fits perfectly on my monitor. Two it has a built in micro phone. All of it made sweeter because it was the best price of other products in the same catagory.

As for picture quality, we have direct 100 Mbps internet line at work to transmit and the quality of the picture (including choppiness) is the same and work has top of the line vidcams.

Since it was my first webcam I had to figure out how to get link with the internet, but that's common when you get a new piece of hardware. It took me about half an hour to get it to work and then chatted with my friend in another state. Picture quality and sound quality is good.

I have windows Vista, so I get the warning window saying HP application for the webcam is not operating when I log in to my account for the first time after computer is turned on for the day, but that is the only negative I have to say. You can turn on this webcam from the buttons on top of the unit so you don't have to have desktop icons if you don't want them.

The unit has a motion detector. I guess that is for keeping tabs on your children, nanny, house keeper, or cleaning service without them knowing. But as a security cam it would be useless--the thief that broke into your home will steal the recording unit hard drive, your computer! Ha Ha! My home was broken into last year and the computer I am writing this review on is an insurance replacement--having your home broken into sucks..so I can kid and laugh about! LOL :)

3.0 out of 5 stars If I was King of the world

The camera, optically speaking, performs as promised. The picture quality is decent and it is small and light, easy to pack up and carry in my computer bag. I guess my one reason for not giving this a bunch of stars concerns the way the unit mounts on the screen. I wanted something that was versatile and able to fit the depth of several different screens and indeed it does that; however, the mechanism for holding on to the screen - does NOT! It opens and closes to fit but doesn't clamp via springs or any sort of tensioning apparatus so any movement of the usb cable will move the camera and has to be repositioned. Now you probably won't need to do this much unless you're moving things around you work area a lot, i.e. books, papers other peripherals. If I was King of the world, I'd rig some kind of adjustment that would produce more of a clamp effect. I got this product on the cheap using a coupon and no shipping cost so I can't complain too loudly. Just so you know.....

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Camera

This is a good camera with decent picture quality. I was under the impression that it would record up to 1280x1024 resolution after reading the product description, but it only goes up to 640x480 and after that it just takes still shots. That's really not that big of a deal though.

The picture quality is good provided you are in good lighting. I recorded myself playing guitar and my strumming hand got a bit blurry at some points, which is obvious at the resolution it's recording :).

The sound picks up really well (background noise picks up a little too well ;]) and there is a bit of static noise too, but nothing overwhelming.

The 8.0mp camera is pretty good but you have to have really good lighting for it to come out clear and there are a ton of noticeable pixels in any dark areas.

The way it mounts is bearable. But it's very easy to tap it and the thing falls forward and off of the screen. Though I have it on a laptop so that's understandable.

I've read about people having problems with the software so I was hesitant to install it, but I did anyway. I haven't had any problems with it or any annoying pop ups yet. It also comes with a bunch of nice effects that I will never use but are fun to mess around with haha. I also appreciate that the software is not full of clutter. Everything is straight to the point.

Overall this is a really good camera (works good on Skype as well). I bought it for vlogging and has worked great thus far. For the price it doesn't feel like it's cheaply made or like I can look at it wrong and it will explode into a billion pieces, which is reassuring for me because I'm clumsy :).

It's also possible to open up my sound recording program (Audacity) if you just want to use the mic to record sound. That comes in handy.

Side note: I got my used and there's some crackle in the sound on playback or loud stuff like music (like one of my speakers is blown). I'm not sure if that's for all cameras or just mine because I got it used though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good webcam for a Mac

TheMac iBook laptop that my wife uses did not come with a built-in camera, whereas my MacBook Pro does. When she discovered the joys of Skyping with our kids and grand kids, we needed to outfit her laptop with a webcam. I chose this HP webcam because it got decent reviews and reportedly worked well with a Mac (we Mac users sometimes have special needs you know). The camera arrived just two days after I ordered it. We plugged it into her Mac's USB port and voila, instant video conferencing with no muss, no fuss. No software or special setup was necessary. The Mac automatically recognizes the camera for what it is and turns it on whenever it is needed. My wife has been using this camera several times a week for the past 6 weeks or so with no problem. Sometimes picture quality is better than others, but that is due to Skype and the Internet, not the camera itself.
